there is still good in him
Me: [freaking out about something minor]
Julian: There's so much negative energy in you. Now if only we could harness it for the good...
Me: "There is still good in him, Obi-Wan" - kinda like that?
Julian: No, I mean I need a way to convert it to electricity.
Me: And solve the energy crisis?
Julian: No, just to lower our electric bill.
Me: That's selfish.
Julian: I'm a child of the Eighties. It's all about me.

swinging on a star
...or, I suppose, a tram stranded above the East River. I know everyone's heard the story by now (and if you haven't, well...now you can read it for yourself), but I have yet to come across a treatment of one little twist. In the rescue picture from yesterday's New York Times, Julian and I noticed what looked like two (maybe three) men in Hasidic garb (sect indeterminate) in the rescue basket used to offload passengers from Roosevelt-Island-bound tram. Since they were traveling so close to the start of yom tov, it's possible that R.I. was their destination, meaning that their ultimate arrival there several hours after sundown probably wasn't so terrible. But...what if it waas? What if they were just taking a little chol hamoed pleasure trip and planned to return to Manhattan right away? What if they were dropping off provisions for other Jews on R.I. and planned to continue on to Queens afterwards? What if they themselves were supposed to have been met there by others?
If anyone has the scoop on these guys, and how they managed the last days of Pesach, I'd love to hear it!

oh happy day
Much as I suspected, there are two good reasons to celebrate today.
1 - It's Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's (who, I must point out, grew up in Merrick, NY)!
2 - It's my second blogiversary!

incommunicado
This morning, I left my cell phone at home.
When I try to log into Gmail (or Google Calendar or any of the other associated Google Account services), I get a 404 Not Found messag elike this:
Not Found
The requested URL /sorry/?continue=http://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin%3Fservice%3Dmail%26passive%3Dtrue%26rm%3Dfalse%26continue%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fmail.google.com%252Fmail%252F%253Fui%253Dhtml%2526zy%253Dl%26ltmpl%3Dyj_wsad%26ltmplcache%3D2 was not found on this server.
When I log into Squirrel Mail to use my @gorfajn.com addresses, the program tells me it can't find my prefs file and so I cannot proceed.
Almost nobody has the number for the telephone on my desk at work, because I try not to use it for personal calls. I can't post it here, anyway, so I don't know why I'm even mentioning it.
I can't call anyone from my work phone (besides Julian) or email anyone from my work address (besides Julian) to tell them just about anything, because all of their phone numbers are stored in my cell phone and all of their email addresses are stored in Gmail. And calling/emailing Julian is kind of pointless at the moment, as he is in solid meetings all day long. I can probably remember some of the phantom addresses and phone numbers if I try, but it's probably not worth the effort, because I don't really have anything important to say. I'm just feeling very cut off from the world at the moment (co-workers excepted).
Update: The universe laughs at me. Not two minutes after I posted this message, Gmail appears to be accessible again. And here I thought I'd have a super-productive rest of my day. Actually, I'll have a super-productive rest of my day, anyway, becaues I have to.

We've lost our permanent guest parking spot. There is now a brand-spanking-new Volvo S40 (tricked out, I might add) parked there. Registered to me. :)
